Greener Magic: What are Disney’s Eco-Friendly Initiatives?

When you think of Disney, sustainability might not be the first word that comes to mind, for me it definitely isn't.
However on this trip to Orlando I have seen a few initiatives starting to creep in and I wanted to research and explore those to share with you.
From what I have read, in recent years, Disney has taken bold steps to reduce its environmental impact and inspire millions of guests to join in creating a more sustainable future.
From renewable energy projects to innovative waste management solutions, Disney is transforming its parks to be as environmentally conscious as they are magical.
As small and medium-sized tourism operators, there’s much to learn from Disney’s eco-friendly initiatives.
Here’s how Disney is doing it and what you can adopt for your business.
1. Renewable Energy: Powering the Magic Sustainably
Disney has invested heavily in renewable energy to reduce its global carbon footprint.
Walt Disney World Resort in Florida now houses a 270-acre solar farm shaped like Mickey Mouse. This solar farm powers two of the resort’s four theme parks annually.
Additionally, Disneyland Paris has introduced a 17-hectare solar canopy project, designed to provide clean energy while also shading parking areas.
These efforts align with Disney’s broader commitment to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.
What You Can Do:
Every business can take steps to incorporate renewable energy. Have you considered installing solar panels or switching to a green energy provider. There are grants available for these types of projects, as governments want business to step up. So do some research and see what’s available in your city, state or country.
Also any efforts you do make, we suggest you highlight these efforts in your marketing to attract eco-conscious travelers.

2. Sustainable Food and Beverage Practices
Disney has embraced sustainable sourcing across its parks.
They aim to use responsibly sourced seafood and have introduced plant-based menu options in all dining locations.
In Animal Kingdom, for instance, guests can enjoy Impossible Burgers and other vegetarian options that reduce the carbon footprint associated with traditional meat production.
Disney has also eliminated single-use plastic straws and lids in its parks, replacing them with biodegradable or reusable alternatives.
However, I did notice they are still providing straws and coffee stirring sticks in plastic as well as plastic single use shopping bags. They do have reusable ones to purchase that are made of recycled plastic. I hope the plastic wrap on straws and coffee stirring sticks changes sooner rather than later.
What You Can Do:
Audit your food and beverage offerings.
Partner with local farms, reduce single-use plastics, and introduce plant-based or low-impact menu options.
Even offering reusable water bottles or cups can demonstrate your commitment to sustainability.
3. Reducing Waste: Zero to Landfill Goals
Disney is pioneering waste management techniques with the ambitious goal of achieving zero waste to landfill.
I noticed recycling bins in many locations and also a compost bin at Animal Kingdom, even if it was only one bin.
At Disneyland Resort in California, food waste is collected and converted into animal feed or compost.
Recycling stations throughout the parks encourage guests to dispose of waste responsibly.
At Walt Disney World, leftover cooking oil is turned into biodiesel, which is then used to power some of the resort’s vehicles.
What You Can Do:
Implement a robust recycling and composting program.
Encourage guests to participate by placing clearly labeled waste stations around your property.
For tour operators, provide reusable containers for meals or snacks and reduce disposable packaging.
4. Protecting Wildlife and Habitats
Disney’s Animal Kingdom is a testament to its commitment to conservation.
The park’s design prioritises habitat preservation and features a range of programs to protect endangered species. Many of the 2000 animals at the park were rescued or rehomed.

Disney seems to recognise that its influence extends beyond its gates.
Educational exhibits, such as those in Epcot’s The Land pavilion, teach visitors about sustainable agriculture and conservation.
As we walked through Animal Kingdom there were information stations with a cast member ready and willing to answer questions and share information on the animals you could see.
Through storytelling, Disney inspires guests to adopt eco-friendly habits in their own lives.
What You Can Do:
Use your platform to educate your guests.
Offer tours, workshops, or signage that highlights your sustainability initiatives.
Share actionable tips for how they can support eco-friendly practices at home.
