At Sea: The Unexpected Joys of Cruise Days

Our unexpected joys of cruise days.

When you picture a cruise, your mind might immediately jump to exciting ports of call and adventurous shore excursions.

But what about the days spent entirely at sea, known as sea days?

Far from being “downtime,” sea days are an essential part of the cruising experience, these are an opportunity to relax, reconnect, and rediscover a sense of balance.

On this 7-day Eastern Caribbean cruise, Days 2 and 6 showcased the therapeutic and joyful possibilities of being at sea. I am grateful as it allows me to take time to be on holiday, sleep in, go to the gym and just enjoy.

What makes sea days special?

Relaxation and Wellness

Sea days are perfect for slowing down and focusing on well-being. Cruise ships are equipped with tranquil spaces that cater to every need, whether it’s a rejuvenating spa treatment, a serene adult-only lounge, or a peaceful moment on the deck watching the waves roll by.

On Day 2 of this cruise, we indulged in luxurious couples’ aroma stone therapy—a 75-minute escape from the real world and some much-needed treatment for our bodies that left feeling refreshed and reconnected.

Family Bonding

Sea days also create space for family connection.

From deck games to shared meals and movie nights under the stars, these moments help families strengthen their bonds away from the distractions of daily life.

With so much onboard variety, each family member can explore their interests during the day and then come together to share stories over a delicious dinner.

On our sea days we played board games with the kids and went to a show in the theatre after our delicious 3 course meal in the formal dining room.

Unplugged Bliss

Cruising offers a rare chance to disconnect from digital life and immerse yourself in the simple pleasures of the present moment.

Without the constant buzz of notifications, guests can enjoy watching the sunrise with a coffee in hand, stargazing on a clear evening, or simply losing themselves in a good book by the pool.

Of course we have internet access but we don't have every device linked and it’s very limited which ensures we have a reasonable amount of disconnected time on those days at sea when there is no reception.

Sea days invite you to savor the journey itself, turning travel into a meditative experience.

The Colgate Family at Sea

On Day 2, we embraced everything a sea day has to offer.

We started with a gym session for a cardio workout overlooking the front of the ship , followed by a delicious breakfast in Lido Market.

Geoff and I enjoyed a couples’ spa session, enjoying the aroma stone therapy while Aidan and Emma played games in the ship’s games room.

Later, we reunited for an afternoon by the pool, where we laughed, relaxed, and made new friends.

By evening, they were all gathered on deck for a sunset drink before heading to the dining room and then on to Step One Dance Co show in the theatre.

The Power of Sea Days

Sea days aren’t just about crossing the distance between ports, they’re a key ingredient in creating a transformative journey. They are the relaxation we all need while on holidays.

Whether it’s finding peace in a wellness retreat, building connections with loved ones, or simply taking a breath to appreciate the beauty of the sea, these days offer something uniquely restorative.

For tourism operators, the lesson is clear: balance and renewal are just as important as adventure.

By incorporating elements of relaxation and reflection into your offerings, you can create experiences that leave guests feeling not only entertained but truly enriched.
