Christmas in New York City is a sensory feast, and for us Australians spending the holiday in the Big Apple, it’s an opportunity to embrace traditions both familiar and new.

On Christmas Day we focused on culture, music, a Christmas spectacle, and a blend of soulful celebrations in Harlem along with the glittering grandeur of the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall

This day isn’t just about experiencing Christmas for us, it’s about feeling it and experiencing something unique we would never forget.

Harlem Gospel Choir: A Celebration of Spirit and Community

The morning begins in the heart of Harlem, where we join the world-renowned Mt Olivet Baptist Church Harlem Gospel Choir for a Christmas Day concert like no other.

We of course weren't the only ones, the church built back in 1878 was filled with close to 3000 people.

As the choir fills the space with powerful harmonies and joyful melodies, the atmosphere is electric with energy and emotion. The crowd were involved, singing, clapping and engaging on every level.

The music, rooted in African-American gospel traditions, is a celebration of hope, resilience, and community mixed with some traditional Christmas songs to celebrate the occasion.

For our teenagers, it was an eye-opening introduction to a musical tradition they may have only seen in movies, while my husband and I loved the uplifting themes of unity and perseverance.

The choir’s ability to connect deeply with the audience created a sense of shared humanity, making it an experience that transcends cultural boundaries.

Australian Perspective:  We as Australians may be familiar with church services or caroling, gospel music offers a dynamic, passionate expression of faith and joy that feels uniquely American. The Harlem Gospel Choir’s performance is both a spiritual and cultural awakening.

Transformational Moment: Singing along, clapping, and swaying to the music, we felt a sense of togetherness and renewal. It was a reminder of the power of music to uplift and inspire, no matter where you’re from.

The Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall was a glittering spectacle

Christmas evening, we made our way to the iconic Radio City Music Hall for the Rockettes’ Christmas Spectacular.

The building is lit up with a Christmas tree and lights, the streets surrounding were covered in oversized decorations and lights.

Inside this dazzling performance, featuring precision dancing, elaborate sets, and festive music, is a cornerstone of New York’s holiday celebrations.

The show’s highlights include the iconic “Parade of the Wooden Soldiers” and a breathtaking reenactment of the Nativity.

Our daughter, a dancer, was wowed by the sheer talent and athleticism of the Rockettes, our son loved the light show and special effects while we marvelled at the production’s artistry and attention to detail.

The festive atmosphere, complete with sparkling lights and a giant Christmas tree, makes it a truly immersive experience.

Australian Perspective: For Australians used to outdoor Christmas celebrations, the Rockettes’ show offers a glamorous, theatrical interpretation of the season. It’s a reminder of the diversity of traditions and the universal joy of the holidays.

Transformational Moment: Watching the Rockettes together is a shared celebration of artistry and holiday spirit. It’s a moment to appreciate how creativity and tradition come together to create something timeless and unforgettable.
