Why Emotional Connections Matter

This week I stepped into Walt Disney World. It truly is like stepping into another world.

We have now covered 3 out of the 4 parks at Walt Disney World. Each is very different from the last.

Magic Kingdom is your traditional enchanted world of characters, family experiences and magic. The natural wonders of Animal Kingdom are combined with beautiful jungle style gardens, rustic buildings and ruins from around the world with rides and animal experiences. Then there is the cinematic thrills of Hollywood Studios, themed with Hollywood in the 1950s buildings and vehicles, streets lined with Palm trees and offering  immersive experiences with Star Wars, Toy Story and more.

Disney’s parks are designed to ignite emotions, spark curiosity, and leave lasting memories.

For visitors, each park is a carefully crafted symphony of sights, sounds, and stories.

The good news?

Small tourism businesses can adopt many of Disney’s strategies to elevate their own guest experiences. Let’s explore the magic and what we can learn from it.

Animal Kingdom: A Celebration of Nature and Adventure

Animal Kingdom blends wildlife, theme park and imagination into a breathtaking experience. Visitors explore lush jungles, encounter exotic animals, and journey into the mythical world of Pandora (Avatar).

Every detail, from the hand-carved totems in Africa, ruins of Asia to the glowing bioluminescence of Pandora at night, evokes awe and authenticity.

Key Takeaway: Inspire wonder through details. Consider how you can create detail in your experience.

Animal Kingdom immerses guests through sensory engagement. Visuals, sounds, and tactile experiences combined builds a complete experience.

Practical Tips:

  • Focus on small, meaningful details to create a sense of place.

  • If you operate a nature tour, enhance it with stories about the local flora and fauna, guidebooks for kids, or unique photo spots.

  • Create sensory layers, like soothing background music, distinctive smells, or hands-on experiences that immerse your guests in the moment.

  • What is unique to your city, regions or experience that you can integrate into your experience?

Hollywood Studios: Living the Movies

At Hollywood Studios, you feel like you are stepping onto a 1950’s movie set. You are not just watching the magic of film, you feel included in it.

I piloted and crashed the Millennium Falcon, I shot at Storm Troopers, rode alongside Aerosmith In a limousine, shrunk down to toy-size in Toy Story Land, and strolled down Sunset Boulevard for a classic Hollywood feel.

The park mixes nostalgia with high-tech thrills, all while giving visitors the feeling that they’re the stars of our own adventure.

Key Takeaway: Make guests feel like the hero, focus it all on them!

Disney allows visitors to step into iconic stories, mingle with the famous characters and empowers us to create our own adventures.

Practical Tips:

  • Design experiences where guests feel central to the action.

  • For instance, personalise a cultural workshop so guests leave with a handcrafted item they made.

  • Offer interactive elements where visitors contribute to the experience, whether it’s helping to prepare a meal, planting a tree, or solving a mystery as part of a tour.

  • Engage, engage, engage.

3 Lessons for your business from Disney’s Magic!

1. Create a Cohesive Story

At Disney, every attraction is part of a larger narrative. This storytelling begins before visitors even arrive, with pre-visit marketing, and continues through every interaction in the parks.

Practical Tips:

  • Define your business’s story and share it through your website, social media, and on-site materials.

  • Ask yourself: What emotions do you want your visitors to feel?

  • Whether it’s a sense of adventure, peace, or connection, let that drive your branding and design choices.

  • Tell your story to your customers, it builds their connection with you when they know what you are about.

2. Design Memorable Touchpoints

From the moment visitors arrive, Disney ensures every detail enhances the magic.

Rubbish bins in Animal Kingdom match the jungle theme, Light Poles in Star Wars are built like space junk, while Pandora area glows at night with bioluminescent lighting. These small touches create a sense of immersion.

Practical Tips:

  • Audit your customer journey.

  • When does it start and when does it end? Outline each step, how it looks and how it feels.

  • Does your signage reflect your story?

  • Could your waiting area offer something fun or educational?

  • Even small details, like branded napkins or music in the background, can enhance the experience and make it more memorable.

3. Empower Employees to Enhance Guest Experience

Disney’s cast members aren’t just staff. They are storytellers who bring the experience to life. Whether it’s a wave from a character or a helpful tip from a ride operator, these interactions make guests feel valued and immersed.

Practical Tips:

  • Train your team to anticipate needs, solve problems proactively, and create magical moments.

  • Empower them to personalise the experience, a surprise birthday shout-out or simply sharing local insider tips can turn a good day into an unforgettable one.

  • Allow them to put a little of themselves into each experience.
